Of all the advance reports, only PMI manufacturing has been signaling a loss of momentum for the factory sector. The PMI ended April at the mid-month reading of 52.8 for a 5 tenths decline from March and a 7-month low. Orders are described as subdued and the sample, after building inventories for six months, is now destocking. Production slowed in the month as did purchasing activity. Costs are at a 2-1/2 year high but, in a sign of strength, the sample is successfully passing through the costs as selling prices are also at a 2-1/2 year high.

Other signs of strength include a build for backlog orders which is giving a boost to employment where April strength is pointing to gains for factory payroll data in Friday's employment report. But the PMI services flash, posted at mid-month, slowed to a 7-year low which points to payroll trouble outside of the factory sector. The April final for PMI services will be posted on Wednesday. Up next at 10:00 a.m. ET this morning is ISM manufacturing where strength, in sharp contrast, has been outstanding.

Consensus Outlook
Unlike the rival ISM, Markit Economics' PMI has not been pointing to outstanding acceleration for the manufacturing sector. To the contrary, loss of momentum was the signal from the April flash which fell 6 tenths and included slowing for new orders. Forecasters see the final reading unchanged from mid-month at a consensus 52.8.

Based on monthly questionnaire surveys of selected companies, the Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index (PMI) offers an advance indication on month-to-month activity in the private sector economy by tracking changes in variables such as output, new orders, stock levels, employment and prices across manufacturing industries. The final index for the current month is released roughly a week after the flash.  Why Investors Care
